From 17:52 to 18:40 this evening a Brush Cuckoo was calling from one of
the small Eucalyptus (failed to note species, either sideroxylon or
leucoxylon) behind the bus stop on Antill Street almost opposite Cadell
Street. Ironically, I had spent several hours this afternoon on Mt
Majura and encountered nothing unexpected and only upon going to the
kids soccer training did anything unusual happen. Not only is it
unusual to find a Brush Cuckoo in Dickson but I have not recorded this
species in August previously in the ACT. I have seen them previously on
both Mt Ainslie and Mt Majura in September and October in the wetter
seasons of the late 1980s.
I rate this species as a true harbinger of spring and its appearance
accords with many other observations reported in the last several days.
