Hi Everyone,

When I was at RSPCA we always got a lot of barn owls at this time of year for a month or so.  They were all thin and had scratches on their feet.  Obviously they had trouble catching prey and were losing condition.  We put it down to injuries during mating but could have been totally wrong.  However, I doubt that the numbers are unprecedented this year, it is just a normal pattern.

We would apply salve to the feet and feed them up and after a week release them.  Jerry Olsen often did measurements and banding of these birds.

cheers,
Marg

I am told that the RSPCA and vet hospitals have been seeing an unprecedented number of owls (most of which I assume are BOs) in recent times.

Hi All

I recently heard, third hand, of another Barn Owl sighting in the Canberra region. Apparently an injured bird was picked up from a balcony in Lyons. The bird was clearly in a very poor state (presumably from Raven/Magpie/Currawong attacks) and was taken in to care.

Cheers Dan
