Currawongs and Mynas

Currawongs usually do this only if they have prospects of contacting the mynas inside.  They normally won't persevere if the holding/ decoy cage has sufficient space that a myna perching in the centre is well beyond their reach.  They will certainly persevere if the decoys are crowded and their confused behaviour brings them within reach.  I have found that a decoy/ holding cage of about 0.5 cu metre with a cross-section of about 700mm x 700mm is fine for 4 mynas.  They have plenty of space to avoid one another, and so do not behave in an aggitated and confused manner which currawongs find irresistable.  They are able to move out of reach of an inspecting currawong without disturbing one another and tend to sit quietly, even if a currawong is hanging on the mesh.  The currawongs quickly give up.  If you are using a smaller holding/ decoy cage, I recommend reducing the number of decoys to 2 to give them a bit more elbow room.

I have the myna trap out in the back yard, with four customers in it.  There are plenty of other customers about, but the whole system is being put in jeopardy by a handful of marauding Pied Currawongs.  The Currawongs are trying to extract the mynas from the trap.  It is frightening the mynas in no uncertain terms, and more to the point, keeping the untrapped mynas away from the trap.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

Please try to refrain from making suggestions about the use of firearms or explosives unless they are really funny.

Cheers
