surveys were undertaken on the morning on 30 june - overcast but not
too cold. 33 species in total, most seen within survey sites as well
as outside. Of note a mixed flock in 2nd site, with Buff-rumped
thornbills, Red-browed finches, a Scarlet robin and Weebills. In that
site two Kookaburras were behaving oddly, flying repeatedly at the
side of a euc, although I could see nothing on the smooth trunk apart
from dozens of small marks caused by the kookaburras.
On 3rd site, what seemed to be a raptor alert call from the noisy
miners attracted another dozen, as well as some Australian ravens,
King parrots, Crimson rosellas and a Grey butcherbird - they finally
dispersed but I still couldn't see the object of their alarm - perhaps
they'd spotted something in a hollow.
Outside survey sites, a large flock of Yellow-rumped thornbills along
the quarry fence, and a Common bronzewing not far from the entrance
(not a commonly seen species at Callum Brae). A Little pied cormorant
at two of the dams.
Now that the overgrown thistles have thinned a little I can see my
final survey marker again - the thistles are up to 60 cm taller than
the star picket and still surround it, and for past couple of survey
periods made it totally invisible (and the nesting goshawks made it
unapproachable late last year)
Bird trails are being set up within Callum Brae by the ranger - a
series of marker posts have already been set up.
