Late this afternoon Damiene Farine discovered some Painted Button-Quail
in the most unusual circumstances at Mulligan's Flat. He graciously
conveyed the location to me; beyond birdwalk marker post 5 where there
remains a boggy area among the swales that only a few weeks ago were
small ponds. The habitat would be most suitable for Brown or King Quail
but no, instead it was the denizen of stony slopes strutting among the
tussocks. One brightly-coloured female and three other less colorful
individuals were present. Currently, there are Brown and also Stubble
Quail in the vicinity so if, perchance, one more species were to be
found could we entertain the notion of quail central?
I have only once in Australia found a single locale with 3 species of
Button-Quail and one true Quail present simultaneously, so the gauntlet
has been laid! That particular locale was not exactly central in any
sense of the word. However, any of the local (woody/)grasslands are
likely to be frequented by quail at the moment so it could be worth a
bit of a search.
