SWIFT PARROT SURVEY 2011 - Birders are reminded that the autumn survey for
Swift Parrots is occurring on the 21-22 May. With a spate of recent
sightings in the Canberra region, it would be great if people could visit
likely haunts to check for this species. Liklely haunts might constitute
sites where they have occurred previously, areas of eucalypt flowering or
areas of lerp infestation. Outside of the ACT but within 'striking
distance' for many birders is the south west slopes region of NSW and also
the south coast. It would be greatly appreciated if these areas could be
covered over the survey weekend or at any time over the autumn-winter. On
the slopes, areas of Grey Box, White Box and Mugga Ironbark habitat are
best focussed on, especially ironbark as it is currently flowering well. On
the coast, I'm unaware of the current conditions but swifties often use
mixed Spotted Gum-Ironbark forests around the Bateman's Bay, Moruya, Narooma
areas and these sites would be well worth checking. For more information,
