not often I score a new addition to my Callum Brae list, but today a
Buff-banded rail flew across the larger of the two farm dams adjacent
to the Callum Brae fence and landed on a muddy patch next to a couple
of black ducks, where it looked around for about 20 seconds before
scuttling into the vegetation. this was at about 2pm, not an ideal
time for birdwatching, and I hadn't expected a good result from a
stroll around, but that made up for the relative lack of other bird
life. There was a feeding flock along the quarry fence close to the
brick pump station - scarlet robin, speckled warbler, grey fantails,
and lots of yellow rumped and buff rumped thornbills, with a couple of
white plumed honeyeaters hurrying everyone along. A very large flock
of pied currawongs making lots of noise in the middle of the reserve -
I counted 33 birds as they took off sandra h
