Yesterday, around midday we went to Warragandra homestead, which is on
Jerrabatgulla Creek where Hart's Rd crosses the creek. Well, we were in that
vicinity. We saw thousands of honeyeaters, flying in, some high, some low from
slightly south of west. They then streamed up Hart's Road. It was a wonderful
sight, so much better than just seeing a handful of migrating birds in
Canberra. Hundreds fly past Lindsay's house, at Jerrabomberra. That is good,
but Warragandra is very special. We were not able to tell how many white-naped
were in the flocks. They were flying too fast and only alighted on trees very
briefly
I know that the birds take many routes, but for some unknown reason they gather
to fly together in this pathway. A bit like the Murrumbidgee corridor which
does not seem to be used at present.
I am very grateful to Muriel Brookfield, who excitedly reported this migration
route, some years ago. We tried to follow where the birds come from and where
they might go, for some years, with some success.
I can give more information about how to get there to anyone interested. It is
not far from the Big Hole, but on a more westerly road. Very many campers were
at the Big Hole camp ground yesterday
