A small group of us have just returned from a week of birding
in the Riverina, and the highlight was undoubtedly a group of 7 Painted Snipe
which we saw with Philip Maher in a small swampy patch off the main highway to
Hay, north of Deniliquin. Finally, after 2 trips to the Riverina this
autumn, I can tick off this species!!! Although starting to dry out,
there is still a lot of standing water around the plains and by the roadsides,
and plenty of interesting species to be seen including Buff-banded Rails
and Aust Spotted Crakes. Raptors are abundant. Over several days at
Oolambeyan National Park where we did bird surveys for the NSW Parks Service, we
added 3 new bird species to the Parks list.
cheers
