Getting a few suggestions for immature Little Eagle – the “booted” leg
would certainly fit LE, and the “scalloped” back.
We just had this raptor fly over us (in Wamboin), and need some guidance as
to ID.
I fired off a few shots as it circled overhead (well up), and through the
bins it had a scalloped back like a Black Kite. I got an impression of a
light-coloured rump, which would probably make it a Swamp Harrier, but the legs
in close-up look too feathered and too pale, as in the feathers seem to come
almost down to the foot – Swampies have bare yellowish lower legs.
I’ve checked the plates in HANZAB pretty thoroughly, and for mine the
options are female Swamp Harrier and (holds breath ... )
Square-tailed Kite, which would be a first for us here.
Any thoughts?
David
