Martin, as indicated in my March Gang-gang column in my experience the mixed feeding flocks (MFF) are an autumn/early winter phenomenon.  As I also noted (and later reported on this chat line along with other subscribers) I’ve been seeing MFFs in my GBS site since mid February this year, perhaps a tad earlier than I would have expected.

I tend to think of the mixed feeding flocks as being a Winter phenomenon so the  following observation by Frances - in a garden bed today may be a touch previous.  They were all present at once, albeit not obviously interacting.  (She did say she was too busy identifying birds to fuss about behaviours.)
2 Eastern Yellow Robin
1 Eastern Spineblll
1 Rufous Whistler
1 Speckled Warbler
1 Red-browed Finch
2 Grey Shrike-thrush
