Dear All

Walking at dusk at Black Mountain peninsula yesterday evening and saw approx 300 hundred Tree Martins (not sure if only just Tree Martins as light faded) whirling over small reed bed area near where toiliets are getting reconstructed. Quite spectacular against the sunset and then they eventually settled down in the reedbeds along with the Reed Warblers, 4 White Faced Herons, large flock of Starlings (approx 100) - so all in all quite a density of birds in such a small area.

Are there any other known roosting spots for Martins/Swallows towards the end of summer around Canberra ? Where are the largest reported roosting spots? Do birds frequent different roosting areas at this time of year or are they site faithful ? How long do they roost in such areas ? Looking forward to some answers if possible to these questions.

kind regards

Tim
