Lindell,

It is likely that the larger juvenile (3rd photo) is from the 1st brood, the smaller young from a recent (the 2nd) brood (in the A. Grebe broods can overlap, see my earlier message to Martin Butterfield?s question), and the pair may get ready for a 3rd breeding attempt as the mating scene  you have described indicates. It seems the nest did not yet contain an egg.  It would be worth keeping an eye on this pair to see whether they will produce another brood.

Michael Lenz

This morning on the small dam behind the NVC were these Grebes.

There was a juvenile on it's own that appeared to be older than the two juveniles still hanging out with the adult birds.
The family of four stayed near the nest amongst the reeds in the centre when the next moment one of the adults (I presumed the female) got up on to the nest, did some minor adjustments then nestled down then instantly the male mounted the nest and her, making sure that there would be another generation of Namadgi Grebes.
When it was over the female slipped into the water and ruffled up the water around her for about 5 seconds.
An unusual chain of events to witness.
