Canberra in November 2010: Wet end to spring

Rainfall

Canberra Airport recorded 121.4 mm of rainfall during November. This is well above the historical average1of 63.9 mm, and the wettest November since 1995 for Canberra, when 138.2 mm was recorded. The rain fell on 9 days (average 10 days), with the most significant falls occurring at the end of the month, associated with the passage of a low pressure trough. Rainfall totalled 62.8 mm during the last three days of the month - this is the wettest end to November on record for Canberra.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature for Canberra was 22.5°C. This is close to the historical average of 22.7°C, yet significantly cooler than November 2009 mean of 29.0°C. The warmest day at Canberra was 27.7°C recorded on the 12th and 13th, and the coolest day was 13.4°C on the 4th. Across the ACT the warmest day was 28.2°C at Tuggeranong AWS on the 12th, and the coolest day was 4.8°C at Mount Ginini on the 4th.

The average minimum temperature for Canberra during October was 9.7°C, which is above the historical average of 8.8°C, but cooler than the 2009 average of 12.7°C. This is the coolest November since 2004 (9.3°C) for Canberra minimum temperatures. Nil nights dropped below freezing, which is average for this time of year. The coolest night at Canberra was 3.5°C on the 3rd, and for the ACT the coolest was -0.8°C at Mount Ginini on the 5th.

Wind

Canberra Airport experienced prevailing north to north-westerly winds during November, with a frequency of 56% from this direction at 3pm, which is about average for this time of year. The highest wind gust at Canberra Airport was 52 km/hr from the west on the 10th

Other phenomena

Sunshine averaged 7.2 hours per day, which is below the historical average of 8.9 hours per day, and the least amount of sunshine recorded for November since 2000 (6.7 hours/day).
