For the record, Lindell has told me she saw and photographed 10-12 Cattle Egrets by the river on 16 October, so they have probably been around since then at least.  I suppose the extremely boggy nature of the flats has deterred walking observers, while the shorter kayaker or cyclist would have difficulty seeing over the tall grass.
