Following the most recent dump of datasheets, the blitz results
stand as follows:
Datasheets received: 221 (of which 63 electronic)
Blitzers: 73
Grid cells covered: 89
Bird species recorded: 148
Bird species recorded breeding: 77
Additional highlights from the recently received datasheets
include a Chestnut-rumped Heathwren and a Painted Button-quail, both from the
Pierces Creek area. No crakes, rails or quail have been recorded though I have
been advised of datasheets still to come which will alter this. Unsurprisingly,
no bitterns were recorded; no Brown Songlarks; and, disappointingly, no Glossy
Black-Cockatoos. The relative paucity of records from the high country probably
contributed to low numbers, or no, records of the traditional high country
species and once again, we didn’t manage to find an Olive Whistler, or even
a Red-browed Treecreeper. Again, few nightbirds were recorded, with the welcome
exception of frogmouths and boobooks.
There will be a further update in the December Gang-gang and results will be presented at
January members’ night and published in the next available issue of Canberra Bird Notes. Lucky draw and other prizes
for participants will also be presented at January members’ night. Many
thanks to all participants. I shall be contacting some of you about data curiosities
shortly. Please get your datasheets in quickly, if you haven’t already
done so. And please make sure you keep the dates of 29-30 October 2011 free for
next year’s blitz.
