The latest state of play regarding sites already adopted for
COG’s bird blitz (30-31 October) has been put up on the website www.canberrabirds.org.au under
the blitz icon. While the central areas are filling in nicely, Namadgi NP is
rather sparsely covered. If anyone has time to count birds on any of the trails
off the Boboyan Road
in the south of Namadgi, it would be greatly appreciated. The new Settlers
Trail, Yerrabi Track, Yankee Hat and Shanahans
Mountain have not yet
been spoken for. Nursery Swamp is also not covered, and it’s possible the
Orroral Valley also. The weather forecast for
the weekend is not promising, but neither is it dire at this stage so birding
should be possible at least some of the time. Nearer to the city, no-one has
indicated they’re keen to survey Percival Hill in the north or Woodstock
NR in the west; no-one has definitively spoken for North Mulligans Flat, or Norgrove Park or Jerrabomberra grasslands. If you
can spare some time surveying over the coming weekend, think about trying a new
spot – you might be pleasantly surprised at the birds you find. Contact me
at if
you’d like to put your name down for a site. And if you can’t
commit at this stage but find time to do some surveying, that’s ok too –
just be sure to let me know what you did after the event! Barbara Allan, blitz
organiser
