Flushed a Bronzewing pigeon while riding on the bike path between the
AIS and Dryandra St this morning. My best view was of the underside of
its wing, which was a rich chocolate brown, but none of my field guides
and none of the photos on the COG web site show this view. I guess the
odds are it was a Common Bronzewing. Also saw a flock of ~15 YTBCs on
East Tallagandra Lane, most of whom were feeding on the ground when we
came across them.
Yesterday, while cycling East up the hill on the bike path that
parallels the fence around the GGs residence, we noticed a pair of
White-winged Choughs taking mouthfuls of mud and grass from some sodden
ground beside the path. We kept them in sight as they flew off up the
hill, and found their nest being built in one of the tall pines just off
the bike path near where it crosses Dunrossil Drive. Watched them for a
while but never saw more than these two birds working on the nest. In
the past when we've seen choughs building nests it's been several birds
doing the work and not just a pair. Also, a juvenile Grey Butcherbird on
the fence around Government House just near Warrina Inlet (within about
ten metres of where we saw it a couple of weekends back).
