Quite a history indeed. In about 1990 Noel Luff led a COG
outing which saw a female lyrebird down there. All reported at the time, no
doubt.

It was I who recently sent in the photo of the exposed
lyrebird's nest - I stopped and had another look at it when I was cycling up Mt
Macdonald last week, and the nest has fallen into some disrepair, so I don't
think it's in use.
Back in the late 1980s, on a mountain bike ride past the big hole, I can
remember watching a lyrebird start from somewhere near the bottom of the hole
and run in an ascending spiral around the walls, eventually emerging at the top
about fifteen metres away from us. It didn't really take any notice of us at
all, just walked off slowly into the bush.
