Geastrum Pectinatum ("Beaked (or Beret) Earthstar") it is.
Many thanks to all for their helpful and informed posts.
My family and I have now concluded that it is safe to emerge from the barricaded shipping carton in the roof where we had taken refuge. Still, as the wise Mr Dabb-Wyndham advises, I shall be keeping a close eye on the critter.

Certainly a Geastrum and almost certainly Geastrum pectinatum.
