In fact, at Mulligan's Flat this autumn/winter we have had large numbers of juvenile Golden Whistlers (compared to last year), and no adults.  This may indicate good breeding success in the mountains, and perhaps little movement to lower altitude by the adults so far this year.  Would be interesting to hear of any observations of adults remaining in the higher country at present.

Roger,

Some excellent photographs, especially the Brown Quail. Your shots 7205 and 7207 are indeed a Golden Whistler but it is a first year bird of unknown sex. In 7205 the base of the bill shows yellow whereas an adult is all dark. The real giveaway to it being a first year bird is the rufous feathers in the wings and on the back. Genuine female Golden Whistlers don’t have any colouring like this in the wings. At this time of year most of the birds locally are altitudinal migrants, coming down from the higher country and are quite common, even in suburban backyards.

Cheers,

Mark
