Not necessarily answering Jean's question, but quite a few parrots splay
their tails on landing. I'd be interested to know how many parrots
do this or perhaps it's characteristic of all parrots? I know
Eastern Rosellas do this spectacularly, but don't have a pic. Superbs - exceptionally widely spread 'fingers'. Glossies - widely spread but broad feathers too so no gaps.
