This, the ‘dependency’ round, attracted a
typically encouraging message from Ian Fraser and a nice one from Julian Teh
with some pretty astute guesses. The high tech brigade again
excelled. Alison did not offer a name for no. 1, so I don’t know
whether that was a typing glitch. Apart from that, and not being too
fussy about the common-name protocol used (esp re the skuas), Alison, Damien,
Yarden, Noel and Leo again scored 100% !! Probably do third one tomorrow
- that might see some sorting out, and help in choosing the Australian
team for the World Championships.
1.
Pitcairn Islands (UK) “Pitcairn
Sparrow” [Pitcairn Reed Warbler - the only passerine in
that remote spot]
2.
Cocos (Keeling) Islands (Australia) “Padda
oryzivora” [ Java Sparrow. Curiously, according to HANZAB
this introduced species was probably extinct on Cocos when the stamp was
issued, although it can still be found on Christmas Island.]
3.
Falkland Islands (UK) “BLACK NECKED
SWAN” [Black-necked Swan. Julian Teh suggested the Coscoroba
Swan so he certainly got the right part of the world.]
4.
New Caledonia (France) “KAGOUS”
[Kagu]
5.
French Southern and Antarctic Territories (France)
“SKUAS” [Subantarctic Skua]
6.
Australian Antarctic Territory (Australia)
“Grey-headed albatross” [Grey-headed Albatross. Is that
a touring COGite pointing the camera? I wonder why it’s being held
in the vertical plane. To include a friend in the background –
or perhaps the artist?]
7.
(former) Netherlands New Guinea (Netherlands) Unnamed
[Western Crowned Pigeon. Of the 3 goura pigeons, as they are called in
PNG, this one is distinguishable by the arrangement of the brown and is
the only one confined to West Irian. The post-mark ‘Biak’,
where the species does not occur, can be faintly discerned.]
8.
Ascension Island (UK) “ CANARY Serinus
flaviventris ” [Yellow Canary. Introduced species.]
9.
Christmas Island (Australia) “Ducula
whartoni” [Christmas Imperial Pigeon]
10.
Australian Antarctic Territory (Australia) “ANTARCTIC
PRION” [ditto]
