Nicki Taws gave an excellent presentation to
Field Naturalists on 4th March. Her topic was
Birdwatch 2: Another Birds Eye View of
Regeneration.
Greening Australia has been studying birds in
revegetation on farms in the region for almost a decade. Surveys of species and
abundance were undertaken in 2000-01 and more recently in 2008-09. Nicki
has played a major role in these surveys and in GA's planting advice to
landholders over that period. The changes in species present are
fascinating and informative.
On Saturday 20th March Nicki will
lead a walk on The Pinnacle where significant plantings
occurred 15-20 years ago. BIrdwatching with
Nicki will offer a unique glimpse of species utilising The Pinnacle as autumn
sets-in but you'd also gain an understanding of the effects of revegetation on
what was once grazing-land in south Belconnen.
Meet off Springvale Drive, Hawker
where this road intersects with De Salis Street,
Weetangera at 8.00am. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing for the
expected weather. IT's planned that the walk will take an hour & a
half to two hours. There's a range of habitats and scenic views to The
Brindabellas across the lower Molonglo's valley.

P.S.
John Feehan will be at the Field Naturalists'
meeting on 1st April bringing us up to date on the fascinating & bizarre
world of Dung Beetles. If attending the above walk and intending to hear John
you may wish to ponder whether there's more rabbit scats around than kangaroos'
poo...
