Hello Julie,
Yes indeed it is a young (Eastern or Common) Koel. Which is a cuckoo.
They parasitise wattlebirds. Years ago the species was rare to Canberra.
In recent years they have been regular in small numbers in the summer.
Until I think this year (or the last summer, or was it the previous
year) there had not been any breeding records of the species here. This
year there have been some. Given the location of the bird you
photographed it may well be one that is already known.

Subject: What bird is this?
Hi, I have just joined your email lists. I have attached a photograph of
a juvenile bird that was being fed by a wattlebird and I thought someone
would be able to recognise it. Is it a cuckoo? Also, for interest I have
attached a photograph of a flying fox, which I don't think are commonly
seen in Canberra. Both were taken in my garden in Narrabundah in the
last couple of days.
Regards Julie.
PS. I did send the bird enquiry earlier, but I don't think it worked. My
apologies if you have received it twice.
