HANZAB is bit light on for the food preferences but does, to my reading give a greater emphasis to active prey (insects, shrimps and fish) for Common Greenshank than Marsh Sandpiper which seems to prefer more static food  - gastropods and molluscs in our area.   That would seem quite consistent with your description of their feeding strategies.

Hi Geoff!

Another clue to help with the ID is the MS moves along with a head down with a steady selective picking type of method while feeding, where as the GS has the head held usually high and will move/run around in active pursuit of  food covering a greater distance.  Actually the first two photos are classic poses of how they look when they are feeding, it would be quite informative if we knew the difference of what they did eat.
