Subject: tortoises on the roads

While travelling through very wet northern NSW (from south of Walcha to west

of Inverell, then down to the coast) early in the new year we saw many, many

tortoises crossing the country roads (and lots of frogs).
It was good to see them - the tortoises were treasures of my country
childhood in central western NSW, when I would ride to dams around our
property and search for tiny babies (2cm diam) around the water edges and
take them to the homes I created in the garden or under the tankstand -
ponds with islands, lots of plants etc, and rather flimsy fences so they
usually were gone after a few days. Not an activity I would now recommend
.... when I went away to boarding school, the always ultimately
unsuccessful search for baby tortoises around the dam edges was a repeated
theme of my dreams.
