Highlights of an enjoyable mornings birding along Blundell's Creek Road and Wark's Road were 3 records of Pilotbird.
Shortly after the first 'good' light I tracked down a vocal pair for brief but close views on Blundell's Creek Road. These birds were using the edge of the eucalypt woodlands and the fern covered firebreak/pylon clearing. There is a well worn path through the middle of the ferns and the birds showed briefly as they crossed this path (35D 20' 55.44''S 148D 49' 33.00"E - google earth).
I subsequently heard Pilotbirds at two spots along Warks Road (both above the locked gates) but didn't put the same effort into tracking these individuals down.
Other nice birds along Blundell's Creek Road included several Rufous Fantail, 3 Rose Robin, Scarlet Robins feeding young, Eastern Whipbirds showing well at several spots, and a few Satin Flycatcher.
The roll call along Warks Road was much the same, minus the Rose Robin but two Red-browed Treecreepers showed very well and Gang-gangs were much in evidence.
Yesterday evening I went for a quick look for the Banded Lapwing at Mulligan's Flat but the total fire ban meant there was no access past the Predator Proof Fence but a scan of the paddocks from outside of this area didn't reveal the Lapwing. Between this corner of the paddocks and the Horse Park Drive entrance to Mulligans there were several small groups of Superb Parrots, numerous White-winged Triller and Noisy Friarbird, a few Dusky Woodswallow and Leaden Flycatchers and a typically noisy group of Varied Sitella (11).
Cheers Dan
