Hi again Margaret,

If I was banding this bird I would call it a 2nd year (2+ in banding terminology) male. It takes 3 years for Rufous Whistler males to attain full plumage and your bird looks well on its way. Juvenile males look more like females and have very heavy streaking and a much paler bill.

Cheers,

Mark

Could this rufous whistler be a juvenile male?  I thought there were two birds at this location (Callum Brae, SE corner, today), but the photos I have of the male and female are very distinct, and this one looks like neither of them.
