Bob There is a fair body of scintific thought eg http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/pub/the-source-of-europes-mild-climate that the Gulf stream is not responsible for Britain's climate (although I and the author of that article both used to believe it to be so). It now appears the crucial factor is that the prevailing wind blows across a body of water which retains heat longer than land.
