I'm not going to obsess over the birds this year: someone else can have a turn.  It such activity is intended I'd suggest the starting time is about today.

Ian's report sounds a lot like the male beginning to establish a nest site and then trying to drive away a female.  If so that could be the starting round of a courtship ritual as described in HANZAB (or indeed witnessed at many High School dances).

At one stage this morning one flew in to join the other and lots of excited posturing ensued; sadly for my romantic ambitions for them, it turned out to be an useemly squabble over a prime perching site. They did have brunch together later though...

Doing the local rounds this morning, checked in at Jerrabomberra Wetlands and the Spoonbills, (yes - plural!) were back - one was seen checking out the accomodation in 'The Tree' while the other spent the time making himself(?) beautiful on the far side of the swamp.
I do hope they stay.
