Scarlet Robin and Little Raven were additions to my MFNR records for
this week.
A Magpie-lark had gathered some material for nest building, but when it
saw me staring fixedly in its direction, it dropped the makings. (The
same thing happened to me in relation to a Common Starling earlier this
week. I will have to get better at pretending to look somewhere else.)
Breeding records included Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (on), Noisy Miner
(ne) and Grey Butcherbird (on).
I believe that Cootamundra Wattles are now a declared weed in the ACT.
This concept is poorly understood by some MFNR birds. With a general
lack of understorey veg in the woodland areas, the Cootamundra Wattles
are very popular hangouts for some species including Brown Thornbills,
which tend to be scarce in MFNR.
I explored another ridge and found many Painted Button-quail saucers,
but still no sightings of the birds themselves.
I am beginning to think that the 'saucers' might be the avian equivalent
of crop circles.
