Has anyone used the image-stabilised (IS) Canon binoculars? They seem like a good idea, and their IS system works very well in telephoto lenses.

Could anyone possibly recommend a brand/model of binoculars for an interested newbie? Aslo where is a good place to buy them from?
There are a number of websites with good advice on what to look for in birding binoculars. eg http://www.birding-binoculars.net/buying-guide.html, http://www.optics4birding.com/buying.aspx.

Given how long binoculars last and how little their technology advances over the decades, buy the best pair you can afford. Leica or Zeiss or Swarovski binoculars cost a lot, but the image quality and ergonomics are excellent, they're fully waterproof (the manual with my wife's Leicas suggests cleaning them in a bowl of water), and they'll still be working just as well in 20 or 30 years time. I reckon around 8x40 or 8x42 is the best size for bush birds.

Over the years I've purchased a couple of pairs of binoculars from Michaels in Melbourne (www.michaels.com.au). They're one of the few places in Australia that actually has stock of several different brands of good quality binoculars so that you can pick them up and do a comparison - Leica, Zeiss, Swarovski, Nikon, etc.

Another option is to purchase overseas. I recently bought a pair of Leica 8x42 Ultravid HD. The cheapest price I could find anywhere in Australia was around the $A3500 mark. I eventually purchased a pair from the US - total cost, including shipping, shipping insurance, and payment of GST, came to about $A2300.
