We found this Snooty Little Bugger (SLB - AKA Mallee Fowl) - on the side of Pheeny's Track in Murray-Sunset National Park a couple of weeks ago. As we neared it, the SLB just stood and looked at us for a few minutes giving us time to call via CB radio to our companions to "sneek up" in their car. They did so; the SLB remained calm and still, and stared at the two cars. It finally strutted nonchalantly back across the road. NOW, I thought to grab my camera but by then the SLB was already halfway across the road, so I shot wildly (ie with the camera) and got a few semi-decent photos. After I downed the camera and went back to my binoculars we discovered that there was another SLB lurking in the sidelines. Had we distrubed a romantic interlude?!
I know that the photos aren't exactly professional (and after all they were shot through a windscreen), but note the second photo and see how the SLB blends into the background!
So, you wanted a good reason to go visit Murray-Sunset NP? - well maybe now you have one!
