Frogmouths

Just as a follow-up to Stuart’s excellent talk last night, I’ve remembered a couple of other incidents of frogmouths forgetting about their camouflage (to add to my example of the bird that landed on a white guide post!)

Last week on the BirdingOz photographers forum, Darryl Luck posted a pic of a frogmouth roosting on a reel of electrical cable. Pic (reel.jpg) attached. From Darryl's post: “His usual place of daytime residence is a wall mounted light next to one of the doors but he has also been seen roosting on a stack of milk crates and very rarely in a tree next to the boom gates. Today I found this fellow soaking up the sun, totally exposed on the earthing lead reel next to a snake bite kit. This bird does not know a thing about camouflage but we love him. Well the cleaners don't because he does occasionally crash into windows leaving big birdie shaped smears on the glass”.

When I was in Alice Springs a couple of years back I spent the day at the Desert Wildlife Park (thoroughly recommended!). At the free-flying raptor display arena there was a frogmouth roosting on one of the raptor perches under the grandstand roof/canopy thingy. Pic (roof.jpg) attached.

And to top it off… today a colleague at work received an email from a friend in Canberra who has a friendly frogmouth come to visit in their yard. The bird flies down and sits on her head, gently nibbling at her hair! Pic (head.jpg) attached. Can you explain this behaviour, Stuart?

Thanks again to Stuart and Dan for fantastic talks last night.

Cheers
Anthony
