This morning, May 24, while casting about with binos at the Pegasus Riding School, Holt, Junior piped up, "Look, the voice of the turtles is nigh."

"What are you romanticising about now?" I grumbled.

"Turtles, see, on that cable," she said, pointing a paw at two Spotted Doves. Although aware of the current common name Sam refers to them as turtles after becoming bemused by an excerpt from "The Song of Solomon" while meandering through that birder's browsing delight "Birds Britannica viz. The flowers appear on the earth / the time of the song of birds is come / And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

Hope the pegasus pair is not the vanguard of an influx of "turtles".

John Layton.
