Following further emails, I discovered more about the place, and the environment there.
 
"Looks like a swamp, the 'trees' look like pines and spruce trees (the building material of the nest), maybe some birches. This is on an island of Hailuoto in the Bothnian Gulf: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=hailuoto
  • Luoto means 'rock' - and hai means 'shark' in today's Finnish which is a bit confusing, but I think in old Nordic languages it has probably referred to some water creature in general.
Anyway, a windy and bare Northern location plus swampy so the trees don't really grow tall. The bird seems pleased with the view..."
