David

A few larger waders fit this description including Curlew, Whimbrel, Grey plover, Golden Plover
Though Oystercatchers call with piping at night they sound more excited than mournful.

cheers

[canberrabirds] Night calls

Can anyone tell me what the bird is that calls at night on the lake in
Merimbula?  I've not heard it since I was down there some months ago, so
I can't give an exact description but it's a mournful piping sound that
carries a long way.

Thanks

DN
