Many thanks to the many members of this chatline who have responded so promptly to my request.  There seems to be  agreement on the best sources.

The most common recommendation was for the Birds in Backyards site and I have provided my neighbour with links to the more relevant sections of that site as well as the following.  A bird finder on Birdpedia also looked to be potentially helpful, although somewhat more complex. It was also suggested that the electronic version of Birds of Canberra Gardens may be useful (as well as the photo-gallery).

A couple of people suggested McComas Taylor's book on birds of the ACT and it was pleasing to say he had a copy on the dashboard as we drove around on Monday!

Again, thanks to all who responded.

A local landholder who is quite interested in birds (and allows me to prowl over his working horse and cattle property) is keen to enhance his bird identification skills.  He has asked me for any websites that he could refer to assist with bird identification.  I have of course given him the URL for the COG photo-gallery but have run a bit short on other ideas.  Is anyone aware of something useful for this purpose?
