Apart from their very nice rollicking song, they do have a loud and rather harsh rising shriek. Maybe that is what you describe.

Hi all,
At the risk of boring everyone to death, the Grey Butcherbird was back in my yard today making a god awful racket.  That, or a bird near us has an atrocious alarm call.  The Butcherbird was just out of sight so I couldn't see if it was the bird calling.  I tried the MP3 at the Birds in Backyards site but the call for the Grey Butcherbird wasn't the same as what I heard this morning.
