They are indeed a big bird, certainly bigger up close than many people realise.

 

I sent these pics around a couple of years ago; I picked up a road-killed needletail on Coulter Drive near Weetangera. Gives you some idea of the size:

Subject: [canberrabirds] White-throated Needletails.

 

Saw a flock of about 50 to 70 white-throated needletails on Rolling Grounds in hills oposite Guthega on Sunday of Canberra Day weekend.  Swooping and "swooshing". I was surprised how big they are. A fantastic display. They came really close.
