I did a loop this morning - Brindabella Rd, Old Mill Rd, Warks Rd - to
see how the autumn movements are progressing. As expected the high
forests are pretty quiet by now. Instead there are strong concentrations
of the common summer high forest birds (eg Yellow-faced and White-naped
HEs, Grey Fans, Spotted Pardalotes) along the gully of Bulls Heads Creek
along Warks Road, below 900masl. A bit higher, at about 1000masl, I was
at one stage surrounded by a flock of at least a couple of dozen
White-eared HEs, apparently drifting down from the Snow Gums to the
plains. In line with Rick Kuhn's recent suburban ob, no sign of Rufous
Fans (or Rose Robins) in the gullies. All very predictable of course,
though not much happening on the lower Cotter at Vanitys Crossing.
Less predicted was a young Euro at 1100m, at the point where Warks Road
starts its big descent at the intersection with Pago Break. As noted
recently on this line, this is not a common species in the ACT and I've
never seen one in the Brindies.
