Geoffrey,
although I can't put my hands on the relevant
document right now ( Birds Australia), but snipe numbers have declined
significantly over recent years..
This would not exclude seeing some where, some time
still good numbers. In addition to the overall decline, local conditions will
then determine further where they settle etc. etc.
All the other factors you have listed could also be
involved to explain why at K S numbers are down, however, the bigger picture is
of a declining species. The "good old days" are gone - at least for
now!
