Early this morning saw a “baby” Koel being fed by a wattlebird on It seems to be foraging independently, but being fed occasionally. Interestingly, a female Koel seen within 100 m of it – “maternal instincts” or just a good source of food? From: Michael & Janette Lenz <> To: chat line <> Sent: Sunday, 25 January, 2009 4:14:21 PM Subject: [canberrabirds] second Koel baby in Ainslie Yesterday afternoon I discovered a second DY Koel not far from the Ainslie shops - a bit younger than the one Stephanie found earlier.
Sites are about 900 metres apart. I would say that both young originate from the same parents.
Photos show the Red Wattle Bird feeding it. In the last photo you can clearly see that the Koel's tail feathers are not fully grown. The bird was still a rather clumsy flier.
