I swung by Kelly's Swamp this morning to see what was occurring with the Spoonbills and the answer was that no particular avigraphic milestones have been reached since my last message. However, while peering at the nest tree my attention was caught by a flight of ravens in the background (in the vicinity of the silt trap). About 6 ravens were pursuing another, larger, bird which at a glance I assumed was a Little Eagle. However on looking more closely it turned out to be a Nankeen Night-Heron which the ravens chased until it dropped from view towards the swamp near the DAS depot. I can't imagine why the ravens would see a night-heron as a threat, and surely it would be too big for them to view it as tucker. On the water of the Swamp were 6 Pink-eared Ducks which I haven't seen around there for some time. Martin |
