We called in at the Cotter camp site yesterday
pm. Not much around. Very windy. Then we saw a White faced
Heron fly into the tree on the edge of the water, just down from the car
park. It had a nest. As we were watching, the 2 big chicks kicked a
very much smaller one out of the nest. It clung onto the small branch below,
upside down and with its neck over the branch and tried to climb back up.
It fell and, unforunately landed on a lower branch where it just clung on.
Had it fallen in the water, we could have possibly rescued it. But it was
still well out of reach. So I rather fear it is doomed. Shame. But
that is life, is it not?
We also saw a Willie Wagtail feeding 3 chicks in a
nest just over the water, which cheered us up a bit.
