Cotter, Uriarra & Blue Range - 12 October [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

I birded some spots in the Cotter and Uriarra area on Sunday. The first
stop was the Cotter Catchment Lookout Track on Mt McDonald. This 800 metre
walk passes through the community plantings on Mt McDonald and climbs
steadily until it reaches a lookout with magnificent views across the
Cotter Dam and catchment to the Brindies. I highly recommend this walk esp.
now in spring with all manner of plants flowering including Woolly
Grevillea, Tick Indigo, Peas as well as quite a few Grasstrees. Only birds
of note were a Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoo, Pipits and Buff-rumped
Thornbills. Several Rufous Whistlers were also calling along the Grasstree
Track in Stony Creek NR above the Cotter.

I then wandered around Blue Range Forestry Camp which is regenerating well.
The dense bush had a few Satin Bowerbirds and a Fan-tailed Cuckoo present
among others. In some good quality grassy woodland near the intersection of
Brindabella Rd & Uriarra Rd I found Dusky Woodswallow, Rufous Whistler and
Western Gerygone.
And at Uriarra Homestead Dam there were some 20 Hoary-headed Grebes and
several Hardheads and at the small dam by the Little Button-quail spot
there were Red-kneed and Black-fronted Dotterels. Unfortunately I dipped on
seeing the LBQ. A distant Rufous Songlark was also calling.
