This morning about 8am, a pair of Masked Lapwings with two newly hatched
young at the top of Newcastle St behind the Canberra Times. The young were
running up and down in the road gutter of Newcastle St and couldn't get back
up off the road. We thought they wouldn't survive the cars there and so
retrieved them back into the middle of the open paddock. The parents were
quite agitated while this was happening but quietened down and went back to
their offspring once we were at a reasonable distance. I must say, the young
are extremely well camouflaged when they're not standing. I put them down on
the grass, looked back when I was about 10m away, and found it difficult to
see them at all.
