Hi!
As Dimitris has said, there are huge numbers of
Albatrosses, Shearwaters and Prions etc off the coast. I've found that the
best conditions for sea viewing are.
1 - The sun should be behind you looking out
to sea, app after 2pm, this enables you to easily see the white or lighter
undersides the wings/belly of the various birds
when flying.
2 - A good breeze blowing from any
direction except from the west, this wind tends to flatten the seas(
this is OK for whales). A north- east breeze seems to bring the birds
closer to shore.
If
its heavily overcast or if a strong wind is blowing don't bother looking. In
dull weather the birds are near invisible and if its too windy the white caps
off the waves make them difficult to see also. You will find that after
app 3 PM the birds will start to settle on the water in groups 1 to 2 klms off
shore. The Albatrosses and Gannets, up to 30+, are easy to see
because of their size but the others slowly disappear as it gets darker. I hope
this will help you plan your bird trips, keeping the late afternoon for the
pelagics.
cheers
