Hello all,
Just came back from ANU were there was a hybrid duck on Sulivan's Creak. Unfortunately I didn't not manage to get any pictures because as soon as I returned running from home the bird took flight along with two Grey Teals.
Description:
Size= perhaps a tad larger then Grey Teal with which it was associating the most.
Shape= Remarkably similar to Pink-eared Duck. Neck-less, round headed with a fairly large spoon shaped bill (though not as big as Shoveller bill).
Colour= Dark, chocolate brown, (similar to female Chestnut Teal, but not as dark). Cheeks were nearly as dark as the rest of the body becoming paler towards the chin, no (or extremely faint, couldn't as there wasn't enough light) facial lines). Under wing was bright wight as in Pacific Black Duck. The upper wing was the most interesting aspect of the bird: It had no large white patches and displayed a fairly large, green speculum (as in PBD but not as big) flanked by slithers of white on all (?) sides.
Hopefully it will come back tomorrow and be photogenic...As to what species are involved: Either PBD x either Teal Species or even Austr. Shoveler x Teal Species.
Cheers!
Dimitris
